I, like most of the people on earth, could not avoid hearing the results of a certain awards show last eve. The results left me disappointed and disenchanted. The majority of these awards I could care less about, but I had a particularly large interest in Best Actor--Sean Penn's portrayal of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk (a gay man) versus Mickey Rourke's portrayal of a out-of-luck, broken down Wrestler facing his last chance for limelight. Mickey Rourke was denied the award, instead Sean Penn was awarded, again, after he won like 4 years ago or something. WTF!
Firstly, these movies Sean Penn keeps winning awards for, not gonna see'em--Clint Eastwood is no director! Secondly, what's up with this trend towards impersonation? Need I remind us all of "Ray", "Capote" among a slew of others, where all the actor did was their best impression of a real person. Sean Penn is honored for "Milk" and Rourke is denied for actually like, you know, using his emotional imagination and acting. The part that makes this all worse is it's so a political win. So Gay Rights are denied by a ballot vote in November, "we'll make it up to the Gays, you can't get married but guess what, we'll give the most prestigious acting award on Earth to a former homophobic dumbass for playing a gay guy! We square now, right?" Not even a close. And Penn's views on Gay rights? About as sophisticated as his character in "I Am Sam."
Enjoy your bullshit recognition, Sean. "Milk" was a PR campaign for homosexuality, face it, in effort to slowly make the American public more comfortable with it. Despite what you may think, playing a gay man does not make you a spokesman for gay rights. And, you hang out with Bono? Come on
